"Reef Quest 111" New Sea Cat 26 Dive Boat
This award winning "SeaCat 26" high speed, aluminium dive boat design looks great and goes incredibly well, as can be seen in the photo above at fully loaded sea trials. Reef Quest was built in Thailand by our sister company 'SeaCat Ship's by their Australian/Thai team, however a lot of the components came from Australia and many of the subcontractors were also Australian.'Reef Quest 111' is a state-of-the-art dive boat built for daily rough water operations from Cairns, Australia out to the Great Barrier Reef. Also carrying out passenger and crew transfers to the mother ship 'Ocean Quest' and day Scuba Diving trips with up to three dive sites a day for the lucky customers.
This is the third Sea Cat design for Tony Physick of Deep Sea Divers Den in Cairns, being the most modern version of a proven theme. The first 'Reef Quest' was designed in 2000 and is now in the Caribbean ready for another 15 years of service before its next re-fit. The second “Sea Quest” was built in 2004 and is currently operational and doing a great job day after day out on the reef. The upgraded version 'Reef Quest 3' will give the operator better performance, reliability, fuel economy, styling and passenger comfort.
The above photo's are of the beach launching of the new cat at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Pattaya, Thailand with perfect wind and sea conditions. The aluminium hull and deckhouse design is very strong and is in compliance with the requirements of Lloyds Register SSC rules for a passenger vessel operating 150 Nautical Miles offshore. The majority of the aluminium structure was supplied in KIT format to allow the parts to be CNC router cut to for ease in construction.
She has an extremely high standard of fit-out to the accommodation spaces, The lower deck has a forward sunken lounge, main passenger cabin and aft' dive deck. The foredeck is fitted out with plush lounge cushions (dry in most sea conditions) and is a perfect place for sun baking or dive briefings. The fully air conditioned main cabin is fitted with ferry style seats, two U lounges and a large servery/bar. All the tables, cabinets and galley were constructed in Australia and shipped to Thailand and are made from solid silky oak wood from North Queensland. The aft' deck is a scuba divers dream, with provision for up to 70 dive tanks with three refill stations powered by below deck dive compressor and 8 large dive air banks. The dive deck features a two stage hydraulic platform which opens up the complete transom for diving and a folding bottom platform which holds the tender when under way and turns into a stairwell with waist height water access when down. The upper deck has a fully air conditioned VIP lounge, open helm area and integrated "touch screen" electronic system.
The aft' upper deck has a nice outside seating area with teak slat seats. On top is a spacious sun deck with day bed and perimeter seating. Powered by twin Yanmar 911 H.P. mechanical marine engines. The vessel achieved speeds of 26-27 knots fully loaded with an impressive cruising speed of 24 knots @ 85% MCR with total fuel consumption of 260 liters per hour and a super fuel efficient speed of 20 knots @ 60% MCR and 170 Ltrs/hr total fuel consumption. The drive train is through Yanmar YXH 250 gear boxes, Rogers and Lough shafting and rudder and Veemstar fixed pitched propellers in conjunction with the mini keels, giving protection to the running gear and increased tracking especially in a following sea. Although being fitted with 100% mechanical engines the control and gear shift is via twin disc electronic control units, giving a main station with two wing controls. Steering is electric hydraulic and also three station. Reliability is the key for the busy operation, thus two Zenith 60 KVA generators are fitted with 100% redundancy.
